Hatch Haven

Dave & Florence Hatch

Have been in the Grand Valley since 1967. We have raised many crops throughout the years.  Some of our many ventures have included truck farming in which we grew many crops including vegetables and potatoes; greenhouses in which we raised bedding plants, and flowers such at carnations, sweet corn, peppers and a wide variety of other crops.  One reason we have always farmed it to provide fresh, nutritious vegetables to our family. Dave has been involved in one way or another with farming since his early years.  He moved his wife, Florence and young family to the Grand Valley where all 4 of their kids attended Fruita schools.  Some of the biggest reasons for coming here were plenty of fruit and a lot of farm ground, as well as a relatively mild climate.  Watermelon and cantaloupe is our crop of choice these days.  We have a shop out in Loma that can be visited Monday - Saturday.  We are closed Sunday.

Valencia Gardens
Wanda Valencia enjoys gardening, roses, trees, food preservation, and photography.  She was a teacher for over 30 years and likes working with people of all ages.  She grew up on a farm in Southern Ohio with 12 brothers and sisters, mother, father, and great grandmother.  As the oldest child, she was responsible for helping with the younger siblings as well as doing her share of the many chores.  The family farm had dairy cattle, pigs, chickens, garden produce, fruit trees, strawberries, field crops such as tobacco, wheat, oats, corn, soybeans, seed clover, hay, and sorghum for molasses.  The family relied on farming and gardening and very little was purchased at the store.  Each year the family grew a variety    of produce to eat, can and sell in the community.  There was plenty of food, as well as hard work, good times, and the satisfaction of  a job done well
Last year’s garden produce is still being shared with family and friends.  A popular choice is frozen strawberry jam which was preserved the early part of June before the
Wanda has won prizes with flowers, produce, pantry stores, photography, and baked goods.
Wanda and her husband  Alex try to keep their gardens  Alex try to keep their gardens and trees alive at 1068 E. Carolina Avenue in Fruita.  Stop by and see what’s growing—weeds included—an integral part of the landscape too.  What is growing there will surprise you and make you wonder how such gardens exist.
